Prior to the drawing of pairings for The WGC Matchplay, Phil Mickelson released a statement that he would be withdrawing from the event.
“I’m really happy with the new format and TPC Harding Park is a terrific setting for match play, so it’s unfortunate that I won’t be able to play this year”
No details on the cause if this WD are being made available at this time.
The new format Phil is referencing features 64 of the world’s best players placed drawn into 16 groups. Each group will play 3 round-robin matches during Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with the top player from each group advancing to the knockout stage on Saturday and Sunday.
The drawing takes place at noon today, with tournament play to begin Wednesday.
